Determine the Surface Tension of Chinese Herbal Tablet—Siwu Tablet
Abstract: Objective: Lobes problem could encounter by film coating technology, which will affect the appearance of the coated tablets and, most importantly, will affect the uniformity of the film-coated tablets and the release of the active materials. Therefore, a parameter which could represent the quality of the tablet coating is needed. Research shows that the surface tension is an essential factor to the adhesion between the film and the tablet core. The study investigated the surface energy characteristics of Siwu tablet. The surface free energy of tablet core was measured by Zisman critical surface tension method. Method: After measuring the contact angle of a series of pure liquid on the surface of the core by contact angle instrument, the surface tension of Siwu tablets was determined by Zisman critical surface tension method. Result: Surface tension of Siwu tablet core was about 70 dyne/cm3. Conclusion: Siwu tablet is a high surface energy and hydrophilicity substance and has the bipolar characteristics. This study also indicates that the Zisman critical surface tension method could accurately measure and calculate the surface tension of solid.
